The First Week in Practice: A Day-by-Day Plan for Trying the System

What to buy, what to remove from your kitchen, and what each of the first seven days looks like under the system's rules — plus the common mistakes and how to avoid them.

The question we receive most often through the contact page is: "I understand the lists, but how do I start?" This is a practical first-week plan built on the rules of the Tayebat System as documented on this site, not on personal opinion. Before the first line: if you take any regular medication, have diabetes, high blood pressure or a chronic illness, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, read the medical safety page first and see your doctor before changing anything.

Before starting: preparing the kitchen

What goes out

  • White bread, pasta, pastries, breakfast cereals and oats.
  • Milk, yoghurt, white cheese, labneh and plant milks.
  • Chicken, eggs and processed meats (luncheon meat, sausages, ready burgers).
  • Margarine, vegetable shortening and hydrogenated oils.
  • Soft drinks, energy drinks, instant coffee and black tea.
  • Ready sauces (ketchup, mayonnaise, soy), stock cubes and mixed seasonings.

What comes in (shopping list)

  • Basics: white rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, dates, farm butter or baladi ghee, sugar.
  • Protein for three days: lamb or buffalo, sea fish (farmed tilapia and mullet are banned), perhaps pigeon or quail.
  • Vegetables to cook: okra, taro, pumpkin, carrots, corn on the cob.
  • Fruit: apples, pears and peaches (to peel), grapes and strawberries (to wash with baking soda), bananas, pomegranate.
  • Aged cheese: Roumi, cheddar, Gouda.
  • Nuts and tahini: walnuts, cashews, pistachios, natural tahini.
  • Drinks: green tea, Turkish coffee, moghat, thyme.
  • Extras: extra-virgin olive oil (cold), corn or sunflower oil (frying), salt, black pepper, cumin, cane vinegar, olives.

The four rules that govern every day

  1. Eat only at genuine hunger, never by the clock.
  2. Stop at 80% of fullness.
  3. Animal protein every other day.
  4. Water half an hour before a meal or an hour after it.

The seven days

Day 1 (protein day)

At first hunger: boiled potatoes mashed with butter and salt, Turkish coffee with sugar. Main meal: buttered rice with grilled fish and cooked okra. Afternoon hunger: three dates and a handful of walnuts. Evening: a peeled apple if hungry. Today's goal: notice when you are actually hungry.

Day 2 (no-protein day)

Whole-wheat toast with butter and honey, green tea. Rice with taro and pumpkin cooked in butter. Dates and a banana. Roumi cheese with olives in the evening if hungry. Hunger comes earlier on a meatless day — that is normal.

Day 3 (protein day)

Baked sweet potato. Boiled or grilled lamb with rice and cooked carrots. Washed grapes. No dinner unless genuinely hungry; sleeping on a light stomach is central to the system.

Day 4 (no-protein day)

Potatoes fried in corn oil (yes, allowed) with grilled corn on the cob. Buttered rice with cooked vegetables. Tahini with black honey as dessert. Strawberries washed with apple vinegar.

Day 5 (protein day)

Pigeon or quail stuffed with rice — the only accepted birds — with boiled potatoes; or grilled fresh sardines with the bones if unavailable. Dried fruit in the afternoon.

Day 6 (no-protein day)

Zucchini stuffed with rice (purple zone — once a week is fine). Cheddar and whole-wheat toast. Dates and Turkish coffee. A small piece of dark tahini halva if you want something sweet.

Day 7 (protein day)

Beef liver (not chicken liver) with rice, or buffalo meat with potatoes. Pomegranate without seeds. Review your week: how many times did you eat without hunger? How often did you pass 80%?

Common first-week mistakes

  • Overdoing dates and sugar because they are "allowed". Allowed does not mean unlimited; the moderation rule comes before the lists.
  • Cooking with onion and garlic out of habit — both are forbidden; rice and potatoes are cooked without them.
  • Black tea and instant coffee; many do not know both are banned. The substitutes are green tea and Turkish coffee.
  • Fresh juice in the morning — forbidden in the system, odd as that is.
  • Relying on anonymous tables from social media rather than documented sources. Use the Foods page or the checker.
  • The most dangerous of all: adjusting medication after a few days of feeling better. Any improvement in your readings is reported to your doctor, who decides.

What to expect after a week

Most followers report less bloating and a small weight loss — expected from removing processed food and soft drinks and reducing portions, not from any "magic" in rice and dates. Some feel headaches or sluggishness in the first days from caffeine withdrawal (black tea, instant coffee) or reduced intake. If fatigue persists or any of the warning signs appears, stop and see your doctor.

Finally: this plan shows how the system is applied as its author set it out, not that it is right for you. The general idea — cut processed food, cook at home, eat when hungry — can be taken without removing milk, eggs, legumes and vegetables, which is what most dietitians recommend.
